However, the celebration as a festival only started to gain popularity during the early Tang dynasty (618907 CE). In 2008, it was declared a public holiday by China. Although the Chinese festival finds its roots in the Tang (618-907 CE) and Song (960-1279 CE) dynasties, it became popular during the Ming (1368-1644 CE) and Qing (1644-1912 CE) dynasties and came to be known as the Spring Festival thereafter. The festival takes place on September 21st this year. The holiday is also known as Zhong Qiu Jie which translates to 'the night of the autumn equinox' depending on where you are from.
